Welcome to the world of Kalpana Barooah 91° E, a unique studio and workshop engaged in the design and manufacture of exclusive handcrafted wooden furniture. The river Brahmaputra flowing through the city of Guwahati which is located at a longitude of 91.4° east, has served as self-taught designer and fabricator Kalpana Barooah’s muse, inspiring her since the studio’s inception in 1988.

Armed only with geometry and keen observation of carpenters and all manner of craftsmen at work, she found herself veering towards design and manufacture of wooden furniture. She has worked extensively with carpenters, stone masons and various other craftsmen. Her vivid imagination gives her a clear picture of the end goal and she is able to guide those working with her towards it. Having an innate understanding of the technicalities in the job she undertakes, she is able to give easy to follow, detailed and clear cut instructions to her work men.

Geometric figures are her guide. A square or rectangle, a circle, a straight line, parallel lines, and so forth are figures that she reproduces repeatedly in her work. Completely self-taught, she follows her own time tested methods. Beauty is subjective. That being said, her work has wide appeal. Her principles of beauty, colour and harmony are her own. Many factors go into the creation of a single piece, she says and the final outcome is always the sum total of many effects at play. For her beauty lies in simplicity and it passes the test only if its appeal is everlasting.

At our workshop on Nabagraha Hills, we make bespoke wooden furniture for living room, dining room, bedroom and the entire house, in addition to fulfilling special needs. Our products cover the entire range of household furniture including sofas, display units, beds, chairs, tables, desks, cupboards, etc. The style is traditional, drawing inspiration from the Tudors, Stuarts, even the French and the 1930s Arts and Crafts movement. Our work features turnery, marquetry, carving and secret compartments. Our emphasis is on good quality work using mature hardwoods involving minimal use of nails, and very fine craftsmanship. We believe in the pursuit of perfection, striving to make heirlooms or antiques of the future. Our clients include hotels, restaurants and of course, homes.
